EAST ANTRIM BOAT CLUB - SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 2008
RULES AND AMENDMENTS Races will be held under The Racing Rules of Sailing (2005-2008) and RYA prescriptions with EABC amendments and class regulations. Posting a notice on the official board 24 hours prior to the affected race may amend these instructions.
RACE OFFICIALS Race officers and assistants will be by rota. Duty may be changed by mutual arrangement provided the Sailing Secretary is given notice.
NB THE “LIGHT” SYSTEM WILL BE USED (CODE FLAGS FOR BACK UP ONLY)
Where applicable each Monthly Series is divided into two separate series consisting of a Tue / Thu Series and a Sun Series.

Cruiser classes will be divided as follows: - KA class PY Handicap (Rating 1110 and below). KB class PY Handicap (Rating 1111 and above). The information for all events will be posted on the Notice Board. PY ratings and classes will be amended on a per series basis.
SAILING AREAS AND COURSES The sailing areas, courses and number of laps shall be shown either on the official card (1/2001D for Dinghies and 1/2004K for Cruisers) or posted at the clubhouse.
Courses shown on the course card shall be identified by a letter or a numeral for Dinghies and by a letter and a number for Cruisers and shall be displayed at the battery. When a course has been posted at the clubhouse, the letter "X" will be displayed in the appropriate place at the battery. Course cards will be on permanent display in the battery.
Turning marks may be laid at Ferris Point, Barr’s Point and Chaine Memorial, these marks must be passed to seaward. Failure to observe this will result in disqualification.
START AND FINISH (ALL RACES)
CRUISERS: The start and finish is an extension of a straight line between the flagpole at the battery and the pole in front
of the Clubhouse.
DINGHIES: The start and finish is a straight line between the flagpole at the battery and the outer limit mark.
OTHER SIGNALS: In accordance with The Racing Rules of Sailing.
CHANGE OF COURSE
( DINGHY CLASSES ONLY ) Any alterations of course shall be displayed at the battery and the flags/lights of the affected classes displayed. Successive laps need not necessarily be the same as the preceding laps. Competitors are responsible for observing any change of course.
SHORTENED COURSE
This shall be indicated by displaying the Red light / Code Flag S with the class light / flag of the affected classes as the leading boat of the class rounds the last mark of the course. When displayed, dinghy races shall finish at the end of the lap in progress, and keelboat races may be shortened to the finish the race, as the boats go through the finishing line, on any leg of the course.
PENALTIES FOR BREAKING RULES OF PART 2
Rules 44.1and 44.2 (360 turns penalty) shall apply.
PROTESTS
Notice of intention to protest shall be made to the Race Officer within 60 minutes of coming ashore, and a written protest on the prescribed form lodged with the Sailing Secretary within 48 hours of coming ashore.
CRUISERS: All boats shall be in seaworthy condition and carry navigation lights, lifejackets for each crew member, at least one safety harness, waterproof torch, flares, heaving line and float, anchor and warp. Boats shall comply with their own class rules where applicable. The responsibility for safety rests with the owner.
DINGHIES & FLYING FIFTEEN’S: All boats must comply with their class rules. Effective personal buoyancy must be worn at all times. Wet suits alone do not comply. All craft with transom-hung rudders shall have an effective "retaining" device fitted. A 3m towrope must be carried at all times by each craft. The responsibility for safety rests with the owner, but the Sailing Committee reserves the right to inspect any boat for compliance with these rules.
INSURANCE
Adequate 3rd Party Insurance is mandatory for all boats.
DINGHIES & CRUISERS: The time limits will be 17.30 hrs. for afternoon races and 21.30 hrs. for evening races. Boats
failing to finish within the time limit will be scored as “DID NOT FINISH.”
SCORING
The following system will operate: 1st 1 point; 2nd 2 points; 3rd 3 points; 4th 4 points etc. as in appendix A2, low points system in the Racing Rules of Sailing (2005 - 2008).
A Boat that did not start, did not finish, retired after finishing or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered in the series in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing section A4.2.
A boat penalized under rule 30.2 or 44.3 shall be scored points as provided in rule 44.3(c).
DISCARDS
Discards calculated on a per series basis will be -
1 - 3 races sailed - No Discards ; 4 - 7 races sailed - 1 Discard ; 8 or more races sailed - 2 Discards.
TIES
In the event of ‘a tie’ on total points, it shall be broken in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing section A7.
IDENTIFICATION:
CRUISERS: Boats shall have sail number /letters on their mainsail and must display their class pennant on their backstay. DINGHIES & FLYING FIFTEEN’S: Each boat shall carry its full sail number and its class emblem. N.B. Failure to comply may result in that craft being deemed a non-starter.
OWNERS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY ARE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL LOSS, DAMAGE OR INJURY CAUSED BY THEM TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY WHILE RACING AND THEY MUST PROTECT THEMSELVES BY INSURING AGAINST THE RISK.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS AND OR SAILING INSTRUCTIONS MAY LEAD TO DISQUALIFICATION.
